Minnesota Timberwolves Rumors: Ricky Rubio Trade To Houston Rockets With Anthony Bennett Option? Kevin Garnett Free Agent Return Likely

Jun 29, 2015 09:52 AM EDT

The Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Karl-Anthony Towns number one overall and now the team is looking to bring back free agent Kevin Garnett on a deal this offseason and this comes as the Wolves may consider a Ricky Rubio trade to the Houston Rockets or Anthony Bennett trade in the future, as the team has Zach LaVine and Tyus Jones at point guard.

The Timberwolves brought in Garnett at the trade deadline and he now is expected to come back as a free agent this summer. According to TwinCities.com, Garnett "definitely will re-sign" this offseason with the Timberwolves and Flip Saunders will "definitely return as head coach" for the team. The Wolves finished with the worst record in the NBA last season, but they won the draft lottery and picked Towns at number one overall.

Garnett gave the team a much needed veteran presence last season and he averaged f 6.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game last year. The news is not official about Garnett, but other teams are not likely going to chase him much on the market and now he can be a mentor for Towns. Garnett gives the team a solid vet off of the bench as the Wolves build around Towns and Andrew Wiggins. The team added Wiggins in the Kevin Love deal and now the team feels they have two franchise players in Towns and Wiggins, who won rookie of the year.

According to Darren Wolfson of KSTP Minneapolis, the Timberwolves may consider trading Ricky Rubio this offseason, as the Houston Rockets could be interested in making a deal. The Rockets reportedly are looking for an upgrade at point guard even if they bring back Patrick Beverley on a deal. Rubio has been a target for the Rockets in the past and the Wolves could consider making a deal after bringing in Zach LaVine last year and acquiring Tyus Jones in the draft this year.

The Wolves shopped Anthony Bennett at the NBA draft and they could continue looking to deal him this summer. Bennett's contract is tough because he was the first overall pick in the draft and so far he has not played up to that potential. Teams could look at taking him if the Wolves throw in something else and he comes in after averaging just five points and four rebounds per game last season. Bennett may get pushed down on the depth chart and the Wolves likely will continue trying to shop him after Marc Stein reported for ESPN that he was being made available during the draft.

The Timberwolves made a deal to bring in Jones and now they have LaVine and Jones as the main point guards if they make a move for Rubio. The team traded two picks to the Cavs to get Jones and he comes in after helping Duke win the NCAA Tournament this past season. The Wolves feel they have a strong young core after adding Jones and Towns in the draft.
