Dog With Human Face Up For Adoption: Linked Genes Cause New Internet Star (Must See Photo)

Tonik is an 11-pound, 1-year old dog currently available for adoption from the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group in Mishawka, Indiana.  He is described as a sweet boy who is great with other dogs. Oh, and one more thing, he happens to have a face that looks like a human.

It is the kind of photo that may lead to a few double-takes before realizing that is the face of an adorable puppy. Tonik is a poodle-Shih Tzu mix. His image went viral after viewers realized just how eerily human his face looks. With a scowl showing he has a flare of attitude, the photos are helping give Tonik a chance at a new homan. He just needs a bit of love.

He comes to the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Group after being rescued from a kill shelter in Kentucky.  He was due to be put down but was saved just in time.

But how did Tonik's face get to look so much like a human? Humans and dogs actually share similar genes that can cause this reaction. Shih Tzus have also been known to be bred for their flat faces, which Tonik clearly proves, giving him that human resembelance.

Tonik is currently listed at Petfinder.com. The website describes him as very sweet but has not had too much socialization. He is great with other dogs and not too dangerous. He should not be placed with young children because he may get overwhelmed. Petfinder says Tonik needs a good home with a lot of patience and positive energy. He is fully micro-chipped and groomed. His adoption donation is $250.

His photo bodes well for a chance at getting adopted. However, according to the ASPCA, about 5 million to 7 million dogs, cats and other pets enter animal shelters nationwide each year and approximately 3 million to 4 million of them are euthanized after not being adopted. With his internet fame growing by the minute, Tonik should have no problem finding a new home.
