Urban Meyer Challenges Big Ten Coaches To Improve Recruiting, Buckeyes Coach Brings In Top Ranked Class Despite Conference Disappointment

Urban Meyer is known as one of the best recruiters in the nation and the Ohio State coach proved that again by bringing in a new top-ranked class. But Meyer isn't satisfied with the rest of the Big Ten, after a number of schools were disappointing in recruitment this year, losing out on big names to the SEC and Big East.

According to Yahoo Sports, Meyer appeared on the Bishop and Rothman Show on 97.1 FM in Columbus on Thursday, calling out some of the other coaches and schools.

"We do need to as a conference need to keep pushing that envelope to be better," Meyer said to 97.1 The Fan, via Larry Brown Sports. "Our whole conversation [at the Big Ten coaches meeting] needs to be about 'how do we recruit?' When you see 11 of the SEC teams are in the top 25 that's something that we need to improve."

Meyer also said that he will take his thoughts directly to the coaches.

"I don't know enough about what goes on in the other programs. I know I have a lot of respect for the tradition and their historical success they've had," Meyer said. "But we do need, as a conference, to keep pushing that envelope to be better.

Wrote JBook37 on Twitter: "Urban Meyer tells 97.1 The Fan he will address the poor recruiting in the B1G directly with those coaches at the upcoming coaches meeting."

Ohio state's class was highly ranked, but Michigan was the only other school in the top 10 (coming in fifth), while Nebraska at 17 was the only other Big Ten school in the top 35. According to Yahoo, "Other than the Wolverines and Buckeyes, only Penn State landed a coveted five-star recruit."

The SEC dominated signing day, bringing in the top ranked recruit as well as 14 five star players. 13 of the 14 SEC schools finished in the top 31 rankings, according to Rivals.com.

Meyer already made some waves with coaches last year when he took over Ohio State by recruiting players that already committed verbally to other schools. The Buckeyes coach said on Wednesday that recruiting will be different in the future due to new rule changes-and it's not exactly a good thing in his opinion.

"Bad stuff," Meyer said during his signing day news conference on Wednesday. "That's stuff that we're going to have to talk [about], the Big Ten Conference is going to meet and I'm putting together a personal letter to all the coaches in America that I disagree with most of it. I would imagine not many people who have recruited wrote those [rules]."

Last season the Buckeyes went 12-0, but were banned from postseason play due to NCAA sanctions.

"It was a great day," Meyer said at the start of his Wednesday afternoon news conference. "I thought it was going to be a very good day, but I'd put it in the great category."

The Buckeyes signed one of the top recruits in the country in Vonn Bell, a five-star safety from Rossville, Ga.

According to Cleveland.com: Scout.com ranked Ohio State as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country; Rivals.com put Ohio State No. 2, behind Alabama; ESPN ranked the Buckeyes No. 3 behind Alabama and Florida; and 247Sports.com had the Buckeyes at No,. 4 behind Alabama, Ole Miss and Florida.

"It was a great day," Meyer said at the start of his Wednesday afternoon news conference. "I thought it was going to be a very good day, but I'd put it in the great category."
