The Blues have thrown away a string of leads lately against lower teams such as Southampton and Reading, so will have to be wary of avoiding a repeat - despite looking to have been comfortably ahead, they have allowed themselves to be sucked into a battle for Champions League qualification, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton looking to overhaul them.
Chelsea will still be without Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel after Nigeria went all the way to the final in the Africa Cup of Nations, while Oriol Romeu continues his lengthy absence. Petr Cech and Demba Ba could both return after minor injuries, but will have to undergo late tests.
Goalkeeper Petr Cech is also back despite breaking his little finger last weekend while David Luiz is available after proving his fitness against England on Wednesday. Eden Hazard returns to the starting line-up after completing his three-match ban.
Meanwhile, Wigan, conversely, are in desperate need of something to give them a boost and kick off a good run of form as the relegation battle heats up - with all their rivals playing well, they can't afford to leave it too much longer.
They welcome back Antolin Alcaraz and Emerson Boyce from injury. Striker Aroune Kone is back in England following his exploits at the African Cup of Nations but he may start from the bench after his long-haul trip.
Ryo Miyaichi is still out with an ankle problem while Ben Watson, Albert Crusat, Fraser Fyvie, Mike Pollitt and Ivan Ramis all continue to be unavailable through injury.
Likely Line-ups:
Chelsea: Turnbull, Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Bertrand, Ramires, Luiz, Hazard, Lampard, Mata, Torres
Wigan Athletic: Al Habsi, Caldwell, Figueroa, Alcaraz, Stam, McCarthur, McCarthy, Beausejour, Espinosa, Di Santo, Maloney
