Malaga became a real threat to make a run in the knockout stages, but their financial problems caught up to them and Nacho Monreal was sold in January leaving the team with a gaping hole at left back.
Manuel Pellegrini will be unable to select either of his first choice fullbacks for the visit to Portugal, where the team suffered its only ever European defeat. Eliseu and Jesus Gamez are both out of contention while Martin Demichelis could return after missing out on the weekend win over Athletic Bilbao.
Meanwhile, Porto, which will have an extra few days rest come match day, welcomes back James Rodriguez to the starting lineup. Vitor Pereira will stick with the same back four that he has used in every league game as the Dragons look to improve upon a lackluster record against Spanish opposition which includes seven losses in front of their own fans in 17 games.
Porto are still shorthanded in midfield as Steven Defour recovers from injury. He suffered a thigh strain last month and could not get fit in time for this match. Fernando, João Moutinho and Lucho González are almost certain to be Porto's starting midfield in his absence. Silvestre Varela has recently returned from injury and could be in contention to start, though it wouldn't be too shocking to see him remain on the bench. James Rodriguez has also shaken off a recent knock, and is expected to start.
Likely Lineups:
Porto: Helton, Danilo, Otamendi, Mangala, Alex Sandro, Lucho, Fernando, Moutinho, Atsu, Martinez, Rodriguez
Malaga: Caballero, Sanchez, Weligton, Demichelis, Antunes, Toulalan, Camacho, Joaquin, Isco, Portillo, Saviola
