Former North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe was arrested and charged on Monday for not filing his state income taxes for the past three years in North Carolina.
According to the Associated Press, Lowe did not file his returns in the state for 2009, 2010 and 2011, which were the last three years he coached for the Wolfpack, according to the state Department of Revenue. Lowe is currently an assistant for the Utah Jazz in the NBA and was booked into Wake County jail on a $10,000 unsecured bond on misdemeanor charges.
While at NC State, Lowe made a base salary of over $210,000 and was also paid for television and radio appearances that made the number up to $760,000. Along with bonuses and other endorsement, he would have made nearly $1 million. The report also says that a contract settlement after he resigned in 2011 would pay Lowe $900,000, athletic director Debbie Yow said then.
Lowe did not join the team on Monday following the All-Star weekend, but head coach Tyron Corbin said he would return to the team on Tuesday when they host the Warriors in Utah.
"It's a personal matter," said Corbin, who indicated he had spoken with Lowe. "We'll deal with it. He'll make a statement at some point, but it's a personal matter."
Corbin said that the team would not be distracted with the issues related to Lowe, as they have already dealt with problems in the past, including with center Al Jefferson.
"Coach is a great guy," Jefferson said. "I don't know the story. ... he'll take care of. "
Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey did not comment on the situation and neither did Lowe. The report says that Lowe has a home in Raleigh even after taking a job with the Jazz and did not comment to reporters when asked at his home about the situation.
Lowe previously played for the Wolfpack when the team won the 1983 national championship and he came back to the team as coach in 2006 to take over for Herb Sendek. Lowe never could get the team to the heights when he played and never finished higher that ninth in the ACC.
Over his coaching career with the Wolfpack her went 86-78, including 25-55 in conference play. The team did not do any better against in-state rivals Duke and North Carolina, going a combined 3-16.
Lowe previously reached the NIT twice and he was a head coach in the NBA for the Timberwolves and the Grizzlies, going 79-228.
