Rachel Alexandra Serious But Stable Condition Improving After Surgery, Champion Horse Keeping Fans Updated On Twitter And Social Media

Rachel Alexandra, a former champion horse, is in serious but stable condition and is walking and eating after undergoing abdominal surgery.

According to the Associated Press, the horse is being treated by doctors at the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital and has been able to walk around and eat grass. The report says that doctors have given her freed and IV fluids for nutrition on Saturday and that her vital signs are "bright."

Vets Bonnie Barr and Brett Woodie have been treating the horse and said that she is 'smart and strong-willed.'' The surgical procedure was administered on Feb. 13 to help fix a small section of the horse's colon when she was delivering a 140-pound filly by Bernardini.

"If she wasn't as smart and as strong-willed as she is," said Dr. Barr to the Associated PRess, "she wouldn't be progressing the way she is."

Rachel Alexandra won the 2009 Preakness from the 13th postposition The seven-year-old mare had issues last year after giving birth and was treated at the same hospital. Many fans have kept track of her progress through social media and are hoping things turn out better for Rachel Alexandra rather than Barbaro, who was euthanized in 2007 after winning the Preakness.

Stonestreet Farms has been active on social media on Facebook and other sites to give updates on the condition of the horse. The next update is expected to come on Wednesday.
