Arsenal Transfer News: Lyon Duo Gonalons and Grenier Being Monitored by the Gunners as Ogbonna is Also Targeted

Arsenal are lining up a move for Lyon duo Maxime Gonalons and Clement Grenier, while Torino defender Angelo Ogbonna, a reported target of Manchester United, is also being closely monitored.

The Gunners sent scouts to watch Lyon's comfortable 4-0 win over Bordeaux at the weekend, a result which incidentally brought them to within three points of Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint Germain.

Arsene Wenger is of course known to take players from the French League often, and Gonalons, in particular, might not be such a bad signing.

Arsenal are in dire need of a defensive midfielder and have already been heavily linked with moves for Etienne Capoue of Toulouse and Victor Wanyama of Celtic.

The Gunners are also looking at the possibility of bringing in Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Sebastian Rode, while a move for Lars Bender has been mooted in the past.

There is little doubt that Arsenal need to make changes, particularly after the horrifying last few days, where they first lost to Championship side Blackburn in the fifth round of the F.A. Cup, and then suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League, which effectively ended their European campaign, barring a miracle.

Wenger has always been hesitant to spend money in his 16 years at Arsenal, but the manager is thought to be armed with a £70 million ($108 million) transfer chest in the summer, leading to suggestions that finally the Frenchman might spend some money.

Gonalons has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the past and has come on quite a bit in the last couple of years, while earning himself six caps for France.

The 23-year-old is well thought of in France, and could be a good addition, although some might say Arsenal need to go for more proven, sure-shot players next season.

The same goes for Clement Grenier, who was impressive for Lyon in the game against Bordeaux, but is still far from the finished product.

Wenger is also keeping a close eye on central defender Ogbonna, according to Mercato 365, and with the way that Arsenal defend at times, they could certainly use someone with the authority of the Italian to man the backline.

Changes need to be made at the Emirates, sweeping ones at that, otherwise the Gunners face the prospect of sinking into mid-table mediocrity.
