As the Boston Celtics make desperate moves to improve before the playoffs, almost every player on the team has been brought up in a possible trade scenario. While the team is struggling to trade Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo is now looking to be in the mix of possible candidates to be out of Boston. While Rondo is out for the season with a torn ACL, ESPN's Chris Broussard is reporting that the Celtics are willing to trade him before the Feb. 21 deadline.
Rondo is signed through the 2015 season so any team looking to get Rondo would have him for multiple years. This could prove to be a good option for teams looking to build for long-term success. While Rondo is out for the season, when he is healthy he is one of the league's best players. It is hard to imagine the Celtics giving away their most valuable player in the one season he will miss due to injury.
The Celtics have been the backbone of a lot of trade rumors as the deadline approaches. While they continue to be aggressive with teams, they have yet to put a deal together that will follow through. The Los Angeles Clippers announced they were cutting off trade talks for Kevin Garnett. The Celtics were hoping to get DeAndre Jordan and Eric Bledsoe for the veteran center. Throwing Rondo into a possible trade for Josh Smith just might interest Atlanta. The Hawks already have a young point guard in Jeff Teague, but Rondo's skill set could be intriguing.
While sources claim Rondo is available, it seems unlikely he will be leaving Boston any time soon. The team is looking to get younger and Rondo is in the prime of his career. The team is more likely to trade away the aging veterans like Garnett and Paul Pierce. Rondo could easily become the center piece to a much younger and athletic Boston Celtics. However, he could end up being the biggest name sent packing on the day of the deadline.
Prior to the injury, Rondo was averaging 13.7 points per game and 11.1 assists in 37 minutes of playing time a night.
