The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 is in full swing and Galatasaray will get a stiff test on Wednesday as they take on Schalke at home at Türk Telekom Arena.
Galatasaray is tops in the Super Lig standings with 43 points and have been playing very well, not recording a loss since playing Kasimpasa in January. The club enters the game off of a 2-1 victory over Akhisar Belediye in Super Lig play and will put their strong play on the line against Schalke.
Didier Drogba could provide a boost for Galatasaray, as he was one of the players to score against Akhisar Belediyespor on Friday after coming off of the bench. While with Chelsea last season, Drogba heped the club win the European title on a thrilling penalty in a final shootout with Bayern Munich and he is now with the club on a one and a half year deal.
The 34-year-old will be one of the main focuses for Schalke and the combination of Drogba and midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who was signed during the transfer window, could be effective on Wednesday.
Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim said that the 2-1 win could be a sign of things to come for Drogba.
"It gave us a morale boost ahead of the Schalke game,'' Terim said to ESPN.com. "When he is fit, Drogba has the ability both to keep the ball for us up front and to lead the team. When you add Sneijder to that, we will perform much better. Both have integrated with the team very quickly.''
Drogba and Sneijder know what its like to have European success, as Sneijder was on the Inter Milan club that took home the Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup treble in 2010.
Galatasaray has a favorable matchup against a Schalke club that has only one win in their last 12 games, defeating Olympiacos in November. Schalke midfielder Marco Hoger and the club knows a challenge lies ahead for the club, although they feel like they can still win despite the poor play.
Hoger told the club's official website: "Fear is always a bad advisor. Galatasaray has great players like Didier Drogba, Wesley Sneijder and some more. Respect is of course there but we fear no one.''
Even though they will be underdogs, Schalke will benefit from the return of Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who has been dealing with an eye injury.
"We also have good players in our ranks,'' Hoger said. "The fact that Huntelaar is fit again is important. In the current Champions League season, he has already achieved some great results. We all hope that he keeps it up in Istanbul.''
Both sides will be dealing with injuries, as Schalke will be without Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Atsuto Uchida, Ibrahim Afellay and Ciprian Marica. Galatasaray will be missing Tomas Ujfalusi and Johan Elmander, while Emmanuel Eboue could return for the club.
Galatasaray is six points up in the Super Lig and since they have been playing so well, they will have confidence entering the Champions League match Galatasaray is looking to become the first Turkish team to make it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and they have allowed just 45 goals from the start of group stage to the final in UEFA Champions League play.
This first leg match also marks the first meeting between Galatasaray and Schalke and it is the first time Galatasaray has made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League since the 2000-2001 season.
