San Francisco 49ers Reportedly Have Alex Smith Trade Ready And In Place

According to multiple reports the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly found a team to take quarterback Alex Smith off of their hands via trade.

CBS Sports' NFL insider Jason Lanfora tweeted the news:

According to ESPN.com, San Francisco has found a legitimate amount of interest, according to sources. The Kansas City Chiefs are interested and the Arizona Cardinals also are thought to be.

There is no deal in place right now, sources said.

Smith's career started off much slower than expected, but he has proven over the past two seasons that he deserves to be a starter in this league.

Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall draft pick, lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick in November while sitting out with a concussion but was professional at every turn and continued to mentor his replacement.

Kaepernick started every remaining game for the 49ers and helped them get a play away from a Super Bowl title. While he suffered through some mistakes after taking over the starter's job, Kaepernick was impressive, and his physical tools are out of this world.

He left little doubt that he was the future of the 49ers franchise, and that left Smith in limbo.

Smith didn't start again last season but was credited by coach Jim Harbaugh in the week before the Super Bowl for mentoring Kaepernick despite losing his starting job.

The 28-year-old quarterback has thrown for 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 80 career games.
