Kobe Bryant has had trouble with technical fouls throughout much of the season. Bryant received his league-leading 14th technical foul on Monday for arguing a non-call near the end of the first half during the Laker's loss to the Denver Nuggets. Bryant is nearing a possible suspension for too many technicals if the call is not rescinded.
It is NBA policy, that a player is suspended for one game upon picking up a 16th technical foul. At 14, Bryant cannot afford another foul. After 16 technicals, the suspensions come after every subsequent technical foul. Bryant believes his recent technical should be reversed due to the ref not understanding what was happening in the game.
"That technical will be rescinded. Joey didn't know what was going on with that. Me and the other ref, were just having a civil conversation. He kind of jumped the gun," Bryant said.
Bryant said he and ref had a conversation at halftime to discuss the play and he marked it down as something to take a look at. If Bryant does not get the foul rescinded, he can only pick up one more technical foul in the last 25 games of the season or else he will be suspended. At this point, the Lakers cannot afford to lose Bryant during the final push to make the playoffs. The team is three games behind eighth-place Houston and 3 1/2 games behind Utah in the Western Conference.
Bryant has come close to suspension several times in his 17-year career. He did hit the mark in the 2010-11 season. He received 14 technicals in the 2001-02 season and 15 technicals during the 2005-06 season and 2007-08 season. Bryant has vowed that technical fouls will not be an issue for the remainder of the season.
"He knows we cannot afford to lose him for a game. He's a pretty headstrong guy," head coach Mike D'Antoni said.
Bryant is two technicals ahead of DeMarcus Cousins and three ahead of Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant. The count will reset come the playoffs.
