With reports that the New York Jets are shopping star cornerback Darrelle Revis, the San Francisco 49ers have emerged as a team making a run at Revis this offseason.
The deal would work for the 49ers as their secondary was exposed against Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. Although San Francisco had one of the best defenses last season, it was apparent after that the Super Bowl that their secondary needs a little more work.
As for the Jets, they could land numerous draft picks in a deal for Revis, potentially including No. 31 overall and/or No. 34 overall in the 2013 draft.
If the Jets can parlay Revis into a first-round quarterback, it would generate excitement, give them something to build around and minimize the fallout from a situation that's bound to get uglier.
The Jets finished 6-10 in 2012 after finishing 8-8 in 2011, missing out on the playoffs both seasons.
It was expected it would take a lot to land Revis. The thing is, the 49ers have a lot to offer.
According to Yahoo! Sports, San Francisco, which already has 11 selections in April's draft, are expected to get another one in the trade that reportedly will send Alex Smith to the Chiefs. The 49ers are also projected to get three more selections as compensation for players they lost in free agency last offseason. So based on the current roster, they would not be expected to go overboard in the draft.
