The St. Louis Cardinals bolstered their front office on Wednesday, as they hired former great Willie McGee as a special assistant to general manager John Mozeliak.

According to the Associated Press, the team added former player McGee to focus on the minor leagues and player development within the farm system. The Cardinals are coming off of a playoff appearance and are two years removed from a World Series win over the Rangers.

The 54-year-old was added to the team on Wednesday and formerly played on the 1982 World Series championship team. He had many successful seasons and is ranked in the top 10 in franchise history in games played, triples, stolen bases and pinch hits and after being a .295 hitter over 18 seasons.

McGee won an MVP award and was National League MVP in 1985 with a league-leading .353 average for a team that won the pennant. According to the AP, "His batting average from 1985 and 216 hits are franchise bests for switch hitters."

The Cardinals are currently 4-5 in the Grapefruit League in spring training in Florida.
