International Women's Day Gets Shout Out From Danica Patrick On Twitter, NASCAR Driver Role Model For Female Equality In America

Danica Patrick is a trailblazer whether she likes it or not and on Friday she supported the International Women's Day celebration by Tweeting a link to Coca-Cola and their website for a page about stories involving inspiring women.

From her Twitter page, Patrick retweeted: "Happy Int'l Women's Day. #CokeJourney continues the #womensday celebration w/stories of women who inspire us: https://CokeURL.com/Journey  ^AC."

Patrick has been at the forefront of women's issues as the first driver to drive full-time on the Sprint Cup circuit and she has been an inspiration for years to women and young girls around the world.

Patrick won the pole at the Daytona 500 and led laps in the race as the first woman to do so and she also became one of a handful of drivers that has led laps in that event and the Indy 500. She has inspired fellow driver Johanna Long and has proven that men and women can compete on the same track.

Long is driving for the ML Motorsports team and is currently planning to race in 21 of the 33 races in the Nationwide series. Last season she finished 20th in the standings, not far behind Patrick, who came in 10th after starting all 33 races. Patrick also ran in 10 Sprint Cup races and was voted the most popular driver on the circuit. It's hard for some not to compare the two.

"A lot of people don't compare me as much as they did last year, because they know I am a different person and I do my own thing," said Long. "I know I have my own following."

International Women's Day is an important event for women around the world and Patrick has proven why she is a mentor and role model for women everywhere.

Long has been writing and chronicling her time at Daytona on espnW.com and described her expectations for the upcoming season.

"My goal is to race competitively in the top-10 and top-15 regularly. My team has been working extremely hard in the shop over the offseason to prepare fast cars, so there's no doubt in my mind that once I hit the track at Daytona, we're going to have a strong No. 70 Chevrolet," she wrote on the blog.
