Atlanta Braves Rumors: Chipper Jones Going to the New York Yankees? No! Future Hall of Famer Laughs at Yankees GM

The New York Yankees might just be the sorriest team in baseball. Rumor has it that general manager Brian Cashman had guys wonder if Chipper Jones would be willing to exit retirement and help the Yankees at third base as they continue to look for help in the corner of their diamond. The long-time Atlanta Brave simply chuckled at the thought of 1- returning to baseball and 2- playing for a team that was not the Braves.

Jon Heyman, of CBS Sports, points out how amused Jones was by this offer.

Maybe the painkillers after his skydiving accident might have clogged his thoughts. Okay, so let's not be too rough on Cashman.

Jones played 19 seasons for the Braves and was practically the face of the franchise for most of those years despite playing alongside Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz who are all also first ballot Hall of Famers.

Cashman's efforts are slightly brave though. He needs help at third base and first base. Kevin Youkilis was signed to replace Alex Rodriguez who might be back somewhere around the MLB All-Star game. The trouble stems from the recent injury to first baseman Mark Teixeira. Cashman can either acquire a first baseman or a third baseman since Youkilis provides versatility.

In case you can't believe your eyes, Heyman wasn't the only one to comment on Cashman's interest in acquiring Jones.

The Yankees are looking to replace about 50 home runs between A-Rod and Teixeira. They have at least 20 with Youkilis and Jones proved that he can still play at a high level for a 40-plus year-old. In 2012, his final season in baseball, Jones hit 14 home runs with 67 RBI while batting .287.

Scott Rolen and Derek Lee are also guys on the Yankees' radar. Hopefully they simply respond phone calls and don't laugh in Cashman's face.

Which of these three veterans do the Yankees have a better chance of acquiring? Rolen, Lee or Jones?
