The Philadelphia Eagles re-signed Michael Vick and have yet to address any trade situations with backup Nick Foles. Their quarterback situation seemed set, however head coach Chip Kelly and staff is still not satisfied. The team has several quarterbacks signed to contracts, but are still considered drafting one to add to the list. Kelly and company traveled to Morgantown to work out West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.
The Eagles have the No. 4 overall pick in the draft and have to soon make a decision about how they want to use it. The team currently has five quarterbacks under contract: Vick, Foles, Trent Edwards, Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne. However, even with a solid list of qbs, not one of them look to be the future of the franchise. Vick is gaining in age and is regularly injured. Foles is not a mobile quarterback which is the kind of player that succeeds under a Kelly offense. None of the others have seen significant playing time.
Smith is a quarterback that has been thought to be the next best option. He impressed scouts are the combine, running the fastest 40-yard dash at the event. He can act as both a pocket-passer and a read-option quarterback, offering a team the best of both worlds. His general athleticism has ranked him the No. 1 quarterback prospect in this year's draft class. If the Eagles are considering drafting a quarterback, he is the best fit.
With the Eagles' staff traveling to give a personal workout to Smith, it brings up the question of whether or not the team will try and trade backup Foles for more draft picks. Several teams have expressed interest in Foles, including the Arizona Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns. With the right deal, the Eagles could draft Smith and get another solid pick in return for Foles.
Smith threw for 4,205 yards in 2012, completing 71.2 percent of his passes for 42 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He became the Big East's single season passing leader along with being named the 2012 Orange Bowl MVP after leading West Virginia to a 70-33 rout over Clemson.
