The signing of several wide receivers early in the free agency period continues to have an impact on the rest of the market. With Percy Harvin going to Seattle and Mike Wallace signing with the Miami Dolphins, the number of teams looking to sign a marquee catcher is getting smaller. Greg Jennings remains the biggest name left on the market. It was assumed his days as a Packer were all but finished, but now Green Bay is offering Jennings a new deal to stay with the team.
When the Dolphins signed Wallace, it ended any hope of a reunion between Jennings and his former coordinator Joe Philbin, now the Dolphins head coach. The team signed Wallace to a five-year, $60 million deal and was certainly not going to give Jennings a large amount of money too. The Minnesota Vikings were also rumored to be interested in Jennings, but will not pursue him due to his asking price being too high. This leaves the Green Bay Packers.
If Jennings does not sign with a team by midnight on Wednesday, it is likely the Packers will retain the wide receiver. They have offered a deal to him worth around $10 million. This is not a bad contract for the two-time Pro Bowler considering things around him have been relatively quiet. At 29-years old, Jennings will not be able to sign close to what other receivers are earning. Vincent Jackson signed for $11 million in 2012 and Harvin just signed a $11.2 million deal with Seattle. Jennings will not get close to the $11 million mark and would be smart to settle with the Green Bay deal.
There is still a chance the Vikings could swoop in at the last minute and sign Jennings despite not liking his price. With the departure of Harvin, the team is in need of an offensive weapon for quarterback Christian Ponder. Aaron Rodgers is certainly a better quarterback than Ponder which could play into Jennings' decision.
The Packers are probably the only real team in the mix for Jennings. They offer him a total package team. With Rodgers leading the offense, they are guaranteed for a lot of success. Jennings has said he wants to go to a team that is contention to win a Super Bowl, which makes his re-signing with Green Bay even more likely.
