Nnamdi Asomugha continues to be one of the most sought out free agents since officially being released from the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. He has had his name attached with almost every team in search of a better defense. First it was Oakland, and then Tampa Bay and now the San Francisco 49ers are joining the race for the cornerback. The 49ers have made defense their focus for the free agency period. After the team lost Dashon Goldson to Tamp Bay, the secondary is in need of a few upgrades. San Francisco is hosting Asomugha on Thursday and could potentially sign the cornerback this week.
Asomugha was a standout cornerback during his career with the Oakland Raiders, however in the two years he played for Philadelphia he failed to live up to the large contract he signed. The Eagles no longer felt like he was worthy of a contract and released him. Asomugha is very familiar with playing on the west coast. He played college football at the University of California before being drafted by the Raiders where he was named a four-time NFL All-Pro over eight seasons.
Despite two years of poor performance in with the Eagles, all Asomugha might need is a fresh start. A return to his California roots could help. At 6'2, 210 pounds, he brings a lot of size and speed to the corner position. It has only been two years since Asomugha was an All-Star and it is certain he can return to form.
The 49ers are also interested in former Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson. The team is set to meet the free agent this week as well. The signing of either back takes San Francisco completely out of the Darrelle Revis trade picture. The 49ers were already rumored to be taking themselves out of the Revis hunt, but continued to have their name brought up in possible trade situations. If either Asomugha or Woodson is signed this week, the team is definitely not offering up what is needed for Revis.
