The battle for Nnamdi Asomugha is getting heated. The top free agent cornerback on the market is drawing a large amount of interest from multiple teams. Asomugha reportedly took a visit to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, but now another team is trying to pursue him. The New Orleans Saints have been relatively quiet during the free agency period, but now the team is going after Asomugha as they look to improve their defense.
Asomugha's reputation has taken a hit over the past two years during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. He prospered as one of the league's best cornerbacks during his time as an Oakland Raider, but after singing a large contract with the Eagles, his performance declined, ultimately leading to his release from the team.
The Saints are heavily interested in bringing him to New Orleans, reuniting him with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan who was also the defensive coordinator in Oakland during a portion of Asomugha's time there. Under Ryan's coaching, he made an All-Pro appearance and grew as a top player in his position. He held opposing receivers to 13 receptions and zero touchdowns in 2010 with Ryan. If anyone can help return Asomugha to his top playing abilities, it could be Ryan.
The Saints need Asomugha's abilities. Last season, they ranked 31st in the league in passing yards allowed and 29th in the league in passing touchdowns allowed. They also ranked last in first downs via pass plays. Asomugha would give the defense elite cover status. With the New Orleans offense set, a better defense could get them back to the Super Bowl.
New Orleans will have to act quickly with Asomugha. With multiple teams showing interest, he is expected to be taken off the market sooner rather than later. He will not find another deal like the one he originally signed in Philly, but the Saints could sign him to a short-term contract to see if he is a good fit for the team. If the 49ers sign Woodson they may be unlikely to also sign Asomugha. The could open the doors for the Saints to make a move.
