The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl contenders after trading for Percy Harvin from the Minnesota Vikings and they might not be done dealing yet, as they still have quarterback Matt Flynn, who despite signing a three-year contract before last season, is stuck behind Russell Wilson on the depth chart.
Flynn could be an attractive trade option for the Oakland Raiders and the Buffalo Bills, as both teams were disappointed with their quarterback play last year. The Bills cut starter Ryan Fitzpatrick already, while the Raiders are trying to get Carson Palmer to take a pay cut. Although both teams have some options on the roster, Flynn would be an upgrade as he is young and possesses a strong throwing arm.
Flynn is one of the biggest question marks in the NFL, as he has proven he can play a capable quarterback in the league while with the Packers, but since he has never had the chance to start, no team can really know how good or bad he would be during a full season, leaving them to wonder if they should trade for him.
The Seahawks could feel comfortable hanging on top him, as they have a rookie quarterback who they don't have to pay very much, but the team also could try to get some draft picks for him, as they had to give up three valuable ones when they traded for Harvin.
The Packers drafted Flynn in the seventh round of LSU, and according to SI.com writer Peter King, a late round pick could be all the Seahawks could get for him. One reason he could be an option for the Raiders though, is that he has proven to be capable in a West coast offense and has enough athleticism to move around in the pocket.
He hasn't had many chances to play after backing up Aaron Rodgers and then getting beaten out by Wilson last year in training camp, but when he did start in Green Bay, he made it count, throwing for 480 yards and team-record six touchdown passes. Some GM's in the league could see him as the next Matt Schaub, who spent the first part of his career as a backup in Atlanta before making his way as starter in Houston.
When Flynn signed his three year, $26 million dollar deal with the Seahawks, many expected that he would start, but after Pete Carroll saw what he had in Wilson, Flynn was relegated to the bench. General manager John Schneider spoke about Flynn earlier in the year, saying:
"I think we have a great setup," said Schneider, "I feel very blessed that we have two quarterbacks, two starting-caliber guys. What happened last year didn't really have a reflection on what Matt did. I wouldn't think he would be content to be a backup."
Flynn will make $5.25 million in base salary in 2013 and while that is a lot for a backup, since Wilson makes so little, it doesn't really hurt their cap situation. While the Jets now have Garrard to compete with Mark Sanchez, the team could really still use a starter and Flynn could help them improve from their 30th ranked unit, which gained just 180 yards per game.
The Oakland trade could be interesting, as the team would like to have Carson Palmer restructure his deal, but so far the two sides have yet to come to an agreement. Flynn likely will stay put, but as the year goes on and some teams find they are unsatisfied with their quarterbacks, Seattle could get a few calls from executives.
