The craziest week for Elvis Dumervil continues on. After the Denver Broncos threatened to cut the defensive end if he did not take a pay cut, Dumervil agreed. However he did not get his papers in in time and was eventually released. Well, not it looks like Dumervil might be staying in Denver after all. The Broncos have reportedly offered the veteran a new contract to remain in Denver.
Dumervil was scheduled to make $12 million in 2013, but after expressing displeasure about a requested salary cut, the Broncos threatened to release him. Dumervil eventually agreed to a $4 million pay cut, however his agent failed to get the papers faxed in prior to the 4 p.m. NFL deadline. Denver was forced to release the defensive end or they would have been forced to pay his original salary of $12 million.
Dumervil had attempted to appeal his case to the NFL. He claimed to have had a verbal agreement with the Broncos and should be allowed to have that contract honored despite it being late. The NFL denied the appeal and for a good portion of the day, Dumervil was on the free agent market.
Now, the Broncos have decided to try and bring back Dumervil with a new contract. The terms of the contract were not released but it is expected to be much less than the original three-year, $30 million deal that he had originally agreed to. The market for defensive ends is growing weaker by the day and hurting players like Dumervil's value. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Balitmore Ravens were among the teams pursuing Dumervil.
Dumervil will give the Broncos a big pass rusher on defense. In his six years with the Denver Broncos, he has racked up 55 sacks and 225 combined tackles. With Denver's offense being almost completely set, Dumervil could be the last piece they needed on defense to make them a lock for the Super Bowl. The Broncos drafted Dumervil in the 4th round of the 2006 draft out of Louisville.
