The Big East turned down a lucrative television deal last year that led to the breakup of the original conference, but the teams that stayed behind have found themselves a new deal and some new teams to welcome into the organization.
According to ESPN.com, Butler, Creighton and Xavier will be moving to the New Big East when it starts up next season and the team will join the other "Catholic 7" teams that are keeping the conference name. Butler and Xavier are both in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Creighton is leaving the Missouri Valley Conference where they have been dominant.
The teams will join Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, St. John's, Providence, Seton Hall and DePaul to form a new Big East conference and they are all part of the new TV deal that was reached with Fox earlier in the week and announced on Wednesday. The Catholic 7 schools are part of the basketball deal, while the original Big East made a deal with ESPN.
The ESPN deal includes football, basketball and other sports and will pay around $20 million per year for teams. South Florida, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Temple, Memphis, Central Florida, SMU and Houston will be part of the conference, while East Carolina and Tulane will play the next year.
Butler helped put the Atlantic 10 on the map after making two national title games and both Creighton and Xavier have been very successful. The Bulldogs will start their trip in the NCAA tournament on Thursday with an early game against Bucknell.
According to ESPN.com, Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade said in a statement that working with Butler and Xavier have "been mutually beneficial and successful. I wish Xavier University and Butler University all the best in their new conference," the statement said. "They are two outstanding universities with outstanding people."
McGlade also said the A-10 had "anticipated this move and are prepared to proactively move forward."
"As a longtime strong A-10 member, Xavier's departure is unfortunate," McGlade said in the news release. "Butler's departure is a by-product of the chaotic conference realignment environment. BU's association with the A-10 has been a fun ride this year; no regrets from the Atlantic 10 for providing a home for them during the 2012-13 season."
