New York Mets News: Matt den Dekker Won't Require Surgery To Broken Wrist

New York Mets prospect Matt den Dekker will not require surgery on his broken wrist, but will be confined to a cast on his arm for about a month.

Dekker injured his wrist Sunday in the seventh inning after attempting to make a leaping catch on the warning track in front of the centerfield wall, where he tried to catch Austin Jackson's drive. However, winds caused the ball to head over his right shoulder, and as a result he landed awkwardly on his wrist while still trying to make the play.

The news that he won't require surgery was easily the best news he's got after taking a nasty spill.

Dekker was considered a long shot to make the team, but so far through the spring games, he has batted 205/.222/.364 in 45 plate appearances.

Though his hitting can use a little work, Dekker has shown amazing defensive value in centerfield, which means that he will have an impact on the big league team in some way, shape or form.

With it just being one week away from Opening Day, the Mets will have plenty of work to in order to better prepare themselves. According to Newsday, manager Terry Collins acknowledged that he has a long ways to go before he can make a sound decision on a starting lineup.

"I really don't have the faintest idea," he said. "I've got some other positions [where] I don't know who's going to be there yet."
