Vince Young is continuing his attempt at a serious comeback into the NFL. The Texas Pro Day was certainly his last chance to show scouts that he still has what it takes to be a quarterback option in the league. Young led the Longhorns to a national championship win in 2006 and was projected to be a top quarterback in the NFL. However he failed to live up to that and is now trying to redeem himself. After impressing scouts Tuesday, he might just get that chance.
According to draft experts, Young put on a show at the Pro Day. He looked strong passing the ball from inside the pocket and had good accuracy while throwing on the run. Gil Brandt from NFL.com notes that Young looked strong and in shape. A few of his long down-field throws really wowed coaches.
26 NFL teams were present to look at the quarterback. Young was quoted saying he thought he did "ok" at the Pro Day, but clearly he impressed a few people. Young's former head coach Mack Brown, believes the quarterback deserves a second chance.
"He really wants another chance. It's not easy for a guy at his age and with his success to come out here and work out. From what I saw today, someone will give him another chance. Somebody is going to get lucky. Somebody is going to hit the lottery off this workout," Brown said.
The 29-yeard old was a former No. 3 overall pick in the draft to the Tennessee Titans who thought they hit the lottery with Young, but off-the-field issues caused Young to be released. He has not played in the NFL since 2011 after playing six games for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was picked up by the Buffalo Bills in May of 2012, but was released prior to Week 1 on the 2012 season.
Young's strong Pro Day appearance could have the Oakland Raiders calling his number. The Raiders were reported to be in preliminary discussions with the quarterback and have discussed bringing him in for a private workout. Oakland looks to be ready to cut Carson Palmer after he refused to restructure his contract, leaving the team to save $5 million. Terrell Pryor and Matt Leinart would be the two remaining quarterbacks, leaving a roster spot open for Young.
It is improbable to think that Young could step in a start right away, but Oakland has been dropping hints that Pryor would take over the starting spot. Young could be a quality backup if he continues to improve. It is safe to say a team will try to take a chance on him.
