2000 Gold Medalist Dies As Mexican Weightlifter and Sydney Olympic Champion Soraya Jimenez Dead From Heart Attack At Age 35

Sydney Olympics gold medalist and Mexican weightlifter Soraya Jimenez has died at age 35 from a heart attack, according to Yahoo.com.

The report says that the 35-year-old Mexican athlete was seen as a national hero after the gold medal triumph and that she had many health problems during her life. She retired after the Atens games in 2004 and she once was accused of doping, but was later cleared.

She won the gold medal in the 2000 games in Australia and took home the top spot in the women's 58 kg weightlifting category and put up 225.5 kilograms. According to the report, Jimenez said to a Mexican magazine that she had a weakened immune system as well as a left knee issue, which had been operated on over 10 times in her career.
