NFL Draft Rumors: Kansas City Chiefs Likely Trading Top Pick to Jacksonville Jaguars or Oakland Raiders as Geno Smith, Matt Barkley Stock Rises

It is becoming clearer that the Kansas City Chiefs have no intention of using their No. 1 overall draft pick. The Chiefs already have who they believe to be their starting quarterback. They have made significant moves in free agency in order to improve on both offense and defense. There is no longer the pressure to draft a player right away. Instead, the Chiefs are hoping there is a rush on quarterback Geno Smith and they can get a favorable trade in return for the No. 1 pick.

Smith is the player multiple teams are gunning after. Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders are eying the West Virginia quarterback and Kansas City could not be more pleased that teams are beginning to fight over him. Kansas City is looking to acquire more picks in the draft. They gave away their second-round option in order to get quarterback Smith, leaving them with fewer options. In a perfect scenario, the Chiefs move down to at least third in the draft, acquire a second round pick and then use their first pick for one of the talented left tackles.

The Chiefs are likely to have plenty of suitors for that No. 1 pick and since they are now hoping to give it away, the bidding wars can begin. Both the Jaguars and Raiders are making a pull for Smith. The Jaguars took themselves out of the trade rumors for Matt Flynn and the Carson Palmer is all-but gone in Oakland. They are the two teams with the biggest quarterback need and will likely make a desperation move to get the top pick. Sadly this will likely leave teams like the Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals out of the running.

Teams seem to be falling in love with Smith by the day as he moves into the No. 1 overall player position. Drafting a quarterback first overall has become a trend but rarely works out well. In the past four drafts a quarterback was taken first, along with the last five of six drafts. Head coach Andy Reid is notorious for being willing to get rid of the top pick. He likes an open draft with plenty of options. The desperation for a quarterback by many teams will give him the options he is looking for and then some.
