Colt McCoy Traded To San Francisco 49ers Changes NFL Draft As Team Looks At Dee Milliner Trade Rumors and Tyler Wilson Option

The San Francisco 49ers made their second quarterback trade of the offseason but this time instead of sending a quarterback away, like they did with Alex Smith to the Chiefs, the team brought one in, acquiring Colt McCoy from the Cleveland Browns.

According to ESPN.com, the 49ers acquired the backup quarterback for two draft picks, including the fifth 164th overall pick and seventh round 227th overall pick while also sending their sixth round pick. McCoy went just 6-15 as a starter while with the Browns, but he became expendable after the team signed Jason Campbell to a contract.

Owner Jimmy Haslam promised to bring in competition for Brandon Weeden and Campbell was that option and not McCoy. He likely won't get much playing time behind Colin Kaepernick, but the 49ers needed a new backup option after trading Smith to the Chiefs.

The 49ers have 13 picks in the draft after the trade and they still could make more moves as the weeks get closer to the event at the end of April. McCoy threw for over 4,000 yards during his three seasons while throwing for 20 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. McCoy will compete with Scott Tolzien for the backup spot, but after trading for him, Jim Harbaugh may give McCoy the edge.

McCoy had his best season in Cleveland in 2011 while starting 13 games and throwing for over 2,700 yards and 14 touchdowns with 11 interceptions, He will make $2.3 million and the team has a number of picks to work with and they could take another quarterback late in the draft, including someone like Matt Scott or Tyler Wilson.

The 49ers have a number of needs in the draft and since they have so many picks, nothing is off the table, including possibly trading up in the first round to get Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner. The team has needs at cornerback as Chris Culliver is under sized and Carlos Rogers is older and if Milliner slips out of the top five, the team could trade up to get him.

The team has needs at safety after losing Dashon Goldson in free agency and they also could use a tight end after Delanie Walker left to the Titans. The draft has two elite prospects in Zach Ertz and Tyler Eifert and the team could go after both depending on how the first two rounds shake out.

Another quarterback option could be Arkansas Tyler Wilson, as he has gone under the radar most of the offseason and could be a surprise pick late for the 49ers, who could stash him behind McCoy and Kaepernick.
