The Orioles are trying to once again make it to the playoffs. They got a taste of success as they surprised everybody in baseball with a postseason appearance and taking the New York Yankees to the brink in a five-game ALDS. Had Derek Jeter gone down during their series, then maybe the Orioles would have had a chance to play for the league championship.
They bring back a very similar team except, this year, they have a young team with more experience. Pedro Strop was lights out during the WBC and Brian Roberts looked like he hadn't missed any time in baseball as he had a strong spring. They Orioles don't have Mark Reynolds, who powered their lineup the past few seasons, but they have 20-year-old Manny Machado at third base and Chris Davis will be taking over first base duties. Adam Jones will look to once again post MVP-like numbers for his team.
As far as the Tampa Bay Rays, they missed the playoffs in 2013 after finishing in third place. They will try to take advantage of an unhealthy Yankee team early in the season and cement themselves as a contender in the A.L. East. The Rays are young and have new faces like Yunel Escobar, Kelly Johnson and James Loney hitting in their lineup and in their infield.
Today's pitching matchup features David Price, the A.L. Cy Young winner in 2012 versus the Orioles' apparent ace, Jason Hammel.
The Orioles and Rays finished in second and third place respectively in 2012. The Rays posted an excellent record of 90-72 despite missing their slugger, Evan Longoria. The Orioles simply put all their talents together and finished the season 93-69 being 1 of 9 teams with 90-plus wins in 2012.
