Reggie Theus, after trying to get back into the game for a few years, was named the new head coach for Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, taking over the team for Bobby Braswell.
According to ESPNLA.com, the school announced the move on Wednesday and that Theus will be taking over for 17-year veteran Bobby Braswell. Theus was previously the head coach for the Sacramento Kings in the NBA and he also was coach of New Mexico State and the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA D-League .
Theus, who has been trying to get back into college coaching according to ESPN's Andy Katz, was a finalist at UNLV before they hired Dave Rice and now he will have the opportunity to return to California as a coach. Theus is originally from Inglewood and he spent 13 seasons in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls and the Kings franchise in both Kansas City and Sacramento.
Theus is considered to be a good coach at working with student athletes and he previously was an assistant and a recruiter under Louisville coach rick Pitino, who is now playing in the Final Four.
The team went 14-17 last season and 5-13 in the Big West and the team lost its final game 88-75 against Hawaii. The team lost six of its last seven games of the year and now will try to rebound next season with Theus at the helm.
"I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to get back into college basketball," Theus said. "This is what I really want to do. To have an opportunity to coach in my hometown area is really a dream for me. This is what I really wanted."
"This is a game-changing hire for the CSUN basketball program," athletic director Dr. Brandon E. Martin said. "It speaks to our commitment to advancing our program to a national stage."
