Tottenham saw their Europa League run come to a heartbreaking end after crashing to FC Basel 4-1 on penalties in the quarterfinals, while Benfica and Fenerbahce also reached the semifinals at the expense of Newcastle and Lazio respectively.
Chelsea had earlier booked their place in the last four with a nervy aggregate win over Rubin Kazan, but at the end of the day the Blues ended up being the only English Premier League team progressing.
Spurs were at a little bit of a disadvantage going into the second leg in Switzerland, having conceded two away goals in a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane in the first leg.
However, the away side drew first blood, with Clint Dempsey scoring the opener in the 23rd minute. The American forward latched onto a poor clearance from Aleksandar Dragovic, before nicely applying the finishing touches to make it 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.
The lead did not last too long, though, as Basel drew level four minutes later, with the increasingly impressive Mohamed Salah poking home from close range off a pass from Marco Streller, who stole the ball away from Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembele.
Dragovic made up for his error in the first half by scoring Basel's second goal, before Dempsey again came to Spurs' rescue eight minutes from normal time.
With the tie level 4-4 on aggregate, Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen got his marching orders, for a foul on Streller in the 90th minute.
Spurs, however, kept the match level in extra time to force the tie to penalties. Tom Huddlestone missed the Premier League side's first spotkick, before Emmanuel Adebayor failed to convert the team's third.
Basel did not put a foot wrong as Fabian Schar, Streller and Fabian Frei slotted in theirs before Marcelo Diaz netted the most important one which saw Basel through 4-1 on penalties.
At St. James' Park, Newcastle could only manage a 1-1 draw against Benfica, which meant the Portuguese side advanced 4-2 on aggregate.
Papiss Cisse opened the scoring for the home side with 20 minutes remaining in the game, and the Magpies could have gone through on the away goals rule, had they found the second goal, but it was Benfica who scored through Eduardo Salvio in the second minute of stoppage time to take the tie.
In Rome, Lazio was also just a goal away from forcing the game into at least extra time after Senad Lulic scored the first goal on the hour mark to make it 2-1 on aggregate. Caner Erkin, though, put the tie to bed in the 73rd minute to ensure the Turkish side's progress into the semifinals 3-1 on aggregate, after the second leg ended 1-1.
