The Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres are vying to make a final push to getting the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The two teams meet for the final time this season as the remain just mere points out of the eighth spot. The Flyers are in 12th place in the conference, seven points back from making the playoffs, while the Sabres are in 11th place, just six points behind. This game will be very important in their campaigns.
The Flyers have hit a severe skid that could leave them missing their sixth straight postseason appearance. Philadelphia has been outscored 11-3 in a three-game losing streak after just recording a season-high four-game win streak where they put in 18 goals. Danny Briere is having the worst season of his career, recording only five games in the past 26 games, currently on a 13-game dry spell. He returns to the lineup today in an effort to get back on track. The Flyers power play has been dismal as the team has not converted on any of their 13 opportunities in the past five games. Claude Giroux has also been struggling, being held to only 12 goals in 40 games.
The Sabres are also trying to make their own late-season playoff push. They have hit a similar offensive skid, coming off consecutive losses. They are 0 for 19 on the power play, including 0-2 during Thursday's loss to Montreal. They were outshot 42-15 against Monreal. The Sabres are trying to recover from the news that Tyler Myers would miss the remainder of the season due to a broken right leg. He was the team's ice-time leader and replacing him will be no easy task.
Which ever team can make the needed adjustments will be the one to earn that final playoff spot. Both will need epic endings to the regular season if they have any hope of having a chance at the Stanley Cup.
