The Oakland Raiders have been active in free agency this offseason despite having a tough financial situation and the team could continue as the draft approaches, as linebacker Brian Urlacher could be a solid addition to the roster at linebacker after the team brought in Kevin Burnett and Nick Roach, his former Bears teammate.
According to ESPN.com, Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said he has "absolutely" no regrets about how the Urlacher situation played out and that the team was honest and open during the process. Urlacher and the team were in negotiations, but the linebacker said the Bears offered a simple take it or leave it one-year, $2 million offer and the two sides could not agree. Later Urlacher said he was disappointed that no one from the organization called him and that he would have appreciated knowing negotiations had ended before the team made a news release about it.
Emery said that it was a "straightforward" and honest process and that Urlacher is a Hall of Fame player and Chicago legend. He also mentioned that it was a win-win for both sides, as he was one of the most important players to the organization in years. Urlacher spent 13 seasons with the team but dealt with injuries over the past two years as he got older in age.
Later owner George McCaskey and Urlacher spoke and while the team did not rule out possibly bringing him back, the team signed a number of linebackers, including D.J. Williams and James Anderson and they also have looked at linebacker prospects in the draft, which starts on Thursday. Urlacher is hoping to find another team and some options could be the Oakland Raiders or Dallas Cowboys, who likely wouldn't mind signing him for a cheap price.
Urlacher proved last season he can still play and he could make a good partner with his former teammate Nick Roach in Oakland. Earlier in the offseason Urlacher was linked to the Cowboys, but since the team has a tough financial situation after signing Tony Romo to an extension, they might not be able to fit him in. The Raiders ranked 18th in rushing yards allowed per game last season and Urlacher could help out with that.
The Raiders may snag Sharrif Floyd or Dee Milliner with the third pick, giving them a chance to add another linebacker in free agency if they chose so.
