Vijay Singh caused a stir around golf earlier in the year when he admitted using deer antler spray when news came out about Ray Lewis using the same product and after an appeal, the golfer will not face any penalty from the PGA tour or the World Anti-Doping Agency.
According to ESPN.com, the 50-year-old was cleared after the World Anti-Doping Agency ruled that the use of the spray is not prohibitive and he also was out of any PGA Tour penalty, as due to the WADA ruling. Singh was initially sanctioned in February, but that was dropped after the WADA findings, according to PGA commissioner Tim Finchem.
Singh withdrew from the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club citing a back injury and he was told about the news during a practice round earlier on Tuesday and he was later replaced by Andrew Svoboda. Singh has won three majors during his career with 34 PGA wins and although he admitted to taking the substance, there was no test result, which is why the WADA cleared it.
The report says that Singh did not test for IGF-1, which is in the product and without the test the WADA made their decision. According to the Tour's doping policy, that could have meant a suspension of up to one year, although Finchem would not disclose what penalty was initially imposed. Within a week, Singh appealed the sanction and continued to play on the PGA Tour, but has not granted any interviews since releasing a statement in January.
