Longtime Coach Shot Dead In Detroit As Charles Knott Killed Just Before Retirement, Drive By Shooting of Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Has No Motive Says Police

A longtime basketball coach from Detroit was shot and killed on Tuesday night in an apparent drive by before midnight near the 11500 block of Petoskey, according to the Detroit News.

The report says that 54-year-old Charles Knott was killed on Tuesday night when another car pulled alongside of his and shot into him multiple times. According to police, so far no motive has been uncovered and the coach was the longtime girls varsity basketball coach at Detroit Cody for 20 years and he was on his way to retirement. No arrests have been made in the shooting yet.

Some friends speculated it may have been a robbery, but all were upset at what happened when they found out on Wednesday. Knott previously was the education technical director at Cody and then went to Detroit King last year.

"It's a shame," said Donald Anderson, the football coach at Cody. "Coach Knott took pride in his job. A lot of people don't know but he also coached softball, too. Many of his former players kept in contact with him, some on a daily basis. He was the kind of guy who would make sure his players did their chores at home. He cared about them."
