The Kentucky Derby is one of the biggest sporting events of the year and the 139th running of the race at Churchill Downs is expected to be an exciting one and could be the highest rated event on television in a few years and the main Derby race starts after 6 pm on NBC and the 1 1/4 mile track has a number of favorites, including Orb and Goldencents.
The Derby preparation has gone on all day from 11 am to 4pm on NBC sports while the main coverage starts at 4 pm on NBC for the race while the Derby post is from 7 to 7:30 on the NBC Sports Network. There are a number of amazing things that could go down on Saturday, including Kevin Krigger, who is looking to become the first African American to win the race since 1902 and he is just the second one to be in the race as a jockey since 1921. Goldencents, his horse, is co-owned by Rick Pitino, who would love to add another win to his mantle after taking Louisville to the NCAA title. Goldencents is the third favorite on the day, sitting behind 7-2 favorite Orb and Verrazano at 4-1 is second.
Rosie Napravnik is trying to make some history of her own like Danica Patrick by trying to dominate in a male sport, as she is trying to become the first female jockey to take it and she has the pedigree to do it after winning the Kentucky Oaks in 2012. She has plenty of experience riding at the track and her horse has solid odds with Mylute going 15-1 favorite for the race. The 139th running could be the best one in years and one horse will out of it as Black Onyx was a late scratch to the race after coming down with an injury in a chip in the left ankle. The race will remain at 19 horses since it came after the deadline and the horse first made it in after winning the Spiral Stakes and chances are he wouldn't win anyway after being a 50-1 longshot.
Oxbow is a 30-1 odds favorite and has one of the most well known jockeys in Gary Stevens, who was seen on "Luck" last year and the horse from Calumet Farm is looking for a big win as Stevens has a combined 15 Derby wins with trainer Wayne Lukas. Revolutionary is a 10-1 odds favorite and is being ridden by Calvin Borel and trainer Todd Pletcher and owner WinStar Farm LLC will be looking for a big win on Saturday.
Golden Soul is 50-1 and is being ridden by jockey Robby Albarado and last started at the Louisiana Derby in March, while Normandy Invasion is a 12-1 odds favorite and last started in the Wood Memorial, while Mylute started second at the Louisiana Derby and has 15-1 odds and Giani Finish will be looking for just that as 50-1 favorite and last was in the Spiral Stakes and Goldencents is a favorite to win at 5-1 and has a great post position and Kevin Krigger will be looking to make history. Overanalyze is 15-1 favorite, while Rafael Bejerano will be looking for the win.
