Arsenal Transfer News: Higuain Move Agreed with Real Madrid with Striker to Sign Five-Year Deal, But Only If Gunners Qualify for Champions League

Arsenal have come to an agreement over the signing of Gonzalo Higuain with Real Madrid over a summer transfer, with the move set to be made official if the English Premier League side qualify for the Champions League next season.

Real Madrid confirmed last week that Higuain would be sold in the summer, with the Argentine immediately linked with the likes of Juventus, Tottenham and Manchester City along with Arsenal.

It now looks like Arsenal have moved ahead of the rest of the interested clubs, by agreeing a deal worth €22 million (£18.5 million, $28.5 million), according to a report in Spanish newspaper Sport.

Higuain will sign a five-year contract, but only if Arsenal finish in the top-four and seal a place in the Champions League for next season.

Juventus were thought to be the frontrunners for the Argentine international's signature, but Higuain's preference to play in the English Premier League worked in Arsenal's favor, with the 25-year-old reportedly turning down a move to Spurs, and choosing their north London rivals instead, according to the report.

If it turns out to be true, then this will be a huge signing for Arsenal and a real statement of intent from Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal are in desperate need of a prolific forward up front, and even if Higuain might not have had a great season in front of goal this season, there is little doubts about the striker's talent.

The Gunners do create a lot of goalscoring opportunities and sometime lack a player who can be in the right place at the right time.

Higuain will definitely give Arsenal another dimension and help in producing more goals, which has sometimes been lacking this season, resulting in the side failing to kill teams off.

Meanwhile, another Arsenal target heavily linked with the club is Stevan Jovetic, and according to Sky Italia, Wenger is increasingly confident of agreeing a cut-price £15 million ($23 million) move for the Fiorentina man.

Jovetic's teammate Luca Toni has added fuel to the speculation, saying the Montenegrin international does not feel loved by the Fiorentina fans.

"Stevan feels the Fiorentina fans treat him without love," Toni told reporters.

"Everybody says that the player's struggles will end when he starts scoring again.

"The way I see it in this difficult period is that Jovetic is only supported when he is making a difference on the field. At the moment, there is no enthusiasm towards him -- he does not feel loved."
