NBA Free Agent Rumors: Philadelphia 76ers Target Chris Paul or Dwight Howard Over Summer? New GM Sam Hinkie May Look At Jarrett Jack, J.R. Smith and Nate Robinson

The Philadelphia 76ers are coming off of a rough season, but the team has some hope for the future, as they brought in and hired a new team president and general manager in former Houston Rockets executive Sam Hinkie, meaning the team likely won't be going after the big name players, but likely some solid ones that can make a team better.

The team introduced Hinkie during the week and was the new choice by owner Joshua Harris to turn things around in Philadelphia after a rough few years. Hinkie was formerly executive vice president of basketball operations for the Rockets and he now will have the top position with the 76ers. The Rockets have pulled off a nice rebuilding under Hinkie watch, including bringing in names like Jeremy Lin and James Harden to the mix while adding talent like Omer Asik and Chandler Parsons as well as other pieces.

One interesting thing about Hinkie is his background in analytics, which is something the Rockets preach, and he also was a speaker at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. The 76ers also need to hire a new head coach after Doug Collins resigned earlier in the year. Collins had been with the team for three seasons and he will remain as a consultant for the team along with former general manager Rod Thorn.

The 76ers went just 34-48 last season under Collins after the three way trade that got the team Andrew Bynum, but chances are he will leave after not playing a single game for the team this season. The team finished tied for last in the Atlantic division standings and ranked 30th in the league in scoring with 93 points per game. Collins preached defense and had the team ranked ninth in points allowed, but they were 20th in rebounding and 11th in assists per game last year.

The team will likely go after big coaching names even if they can't get them, like Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson as well as the Van Gundy's, while there are a number of players they could go after to help rebuild the team in the short term. Some options could be Al Jefferson, JR Smith, Jarrett Jack as well as Tony Allen, who are all names that may commend some salary, but nothing too crazy that the 76ers couldn't handle depending on the way Hinkie analyzes the situation. The team has young talent in Jrue Holiday and Thaddeus Young, but they need more pieces to build around.
