The Memphis Grizzlies are in the Western Conference Finals and they are the favorite to win it all... Win it all in the West. As the San Antonio Spurs face the Golden State Warriors, the Grizzlies will await for an opponent. No matter who the victor is in this series, the Grizzlies hold the advantage and will advance to the NBA Finals.
The Spurs are the highest ranked team left in the standings. They are a super experienced playoff team and yet, the Warriors have taken them to a corner. The Warriors are down in the series, but this one could have easily been 0-2 after the first two games. Due to the Spurs savvy brand of basketball, they were able to dodge a huge blow in Game 1 and are now up 3-2 in the series.
When looking at this second round series for the Spurs and noticing all the trouble the Warriors have given them, when studying the Grizzlies, the conclusion is that the Spurs will have a hard time matching up with Memphis. Just in case the Warriors make it out of the second round, they too will have trouble defending the Grizzlies.
The Grizzles are a unique team. They can make any shot from anywhere on the floor and they trust any of their shooters. They present troubles on the rebounding side as they possess both Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. These big men have been a force and though the Oklahoma City Thunder thought they had a decent matchup for them, they ended up failing badly. Sometimes, Gasol and Randolph exchanged days on the offensive side of the ball in their series against the Thunder, but when they were both on, OKC was in danger.
The Grizzlies also put a lot of pressure on teams at home. Makes no sense right? The Grizzlies are undefeated at home. So if the team with the home court lets one slip at home, chances are they might return down 1-3, which is what happened to the Thunder.
The Spurs have one of the most productive centers in the history of the game, but can Tim Duncan put up with both Randolph and Gasol? Andrew Bogut doesn't look like a big man capable of stopping either of these guys. The Spurs have a better chance with their size, but on defense, the Grizzlies have a huge advantage. They can clog up the paint making it tough for Tony Parker to take it in, while the long arms of Tayshaun Prince would give any perimeter shooter nightmares (that's for the Warriors), not to mention Tony Allen is one of the best defenders in the league.
The Grizzlies look capable of winning it all. They are making history by playing in their first Western Conference Finals, but after this series is done they will have accomplished another milestone by entering the NBA Finals for the first time in their franchise history.
Here's how both Western Conference Finals scenarios would wrap up:
Grizzlies beat Spurs 4-2
Grizzlies beat Warriors 4-1
