The Denver Broncos might be one of the only teams to not have a quarterback competition happening during organized team activities, but that does not mean there is not a battle happening as other positions. While Peyton Manning is the leader of the Bronco's offense, their ground game is slightly more uncertain. With rookie Montee Ball ready to make some noise and Knowshon Moreno getting healthy, Willis McGahee has some competition. As the running back remained the only player not present at OTAs, is his starting spot up for grabs?
The Broncos made the ground game a focus in the NFL Draft. They selected Montee Ball in the second round. The former Wisconsin Heisman Trophy candidate has caused a slew of rumors that McGahee's roster spot might not be guaranteed. The veteran running back is coming off a torn MCL and broken leg. His health is still uncertain leaving the Broncos to find backups just in case. This did not seem to faze McGahee as he failed to show during the team's first day of OTAs. McGahee's agent says there is nothing to be concerned about.
"He's following the same routine he's done his whole career. He'll be there. He's ready to compete. No messages," Chafie Fields said.
This behavior has come to be expected from McGahee. Many veterans decide to continue resting their bodies and work out on their own until mandatory workouts begin. John Elway does not seem to be concerned about McGahee's recent absence from Broncos' facilities. He stressed the coaching staff would rather have McGahee at 100 percent for training camp instead of stressing his body during OTAs.
McGahee finished 2012 with 731 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 10 games. His season ended early on Nov. 18 when he broke his leg and suffered an MCL tear. He is due $2.5 million in 2013. If he does not come back at full strength, either Ball or Moreno could start over him or replace him all together.
Reports have surfaced that either McGahee or Moreno will be on the team next season, with the other getting cut. Moreno could have the edge because he is younger and is contract is smaller. He is also a better receiver than McGahee. With Denver looking to get younger on the ground, McGahee could see himself out soon. Skipping OTAs certainly is not helping his case.
