The Oklahoma Sooners have some big shoes to fill when it comes to Landry Jones, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the team got a good look at some of those players over the spring in practice, including Blake Bell, who looks like the front runner.
Earlier in the spring game, Bell completed 14 of 23 passes for over 200 yards and two touchdowns and looked sharp in the pocket, which should help him come summertime when the final decision is made. He showed poise in the pocket and while his arm isn't a cannon, he proved he could make passes down the field with ease.
Oklahoma will also have to deal with losing a quarterback earlier in the year as former Oklahoma quarterback Drew Allen will get a chance to replace quarterback Ryan Nassib as the Syracuse starter, as the quarterback is transferring to the school from the Sooners and will be eligible to play this season.
Allen never could crack the starting lineup with the Sooners and completed just 18 pass attempts during his time in Oklahoma, including when Landry Jones was the starter. Allen has excellent size at six foot five and 226-pounds and he will be a part of the group looking to replace Nassib, who is expected to be a first round draft pick at the end of April.
Allen is eligible to play because he graduated from Oklahoma and with one year of eligibility for himself he can play a season with another school. Allen confirmed the news and said that he is looking forward to competing and helping the Orange win. His move is similar to Duke basketball star Greg Paulus, who played one season for Syracuse after playing and graduating at Duke.
While playing as a senior at Alamo Heights School in Texas he passed for over 2,300 yards and 22 touchdowns and was highly recruited by teams in the conference, including Purdue, Colorado, Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Syracuse went 8-5 last season and 5-2 in the Big East under coach Doug Marrone, who is now head of the Buffalo Bills. The team ranked 29th in passing yards behind Nassib, gaining nearly 300 yards per game and 46th in points with nearly 25 per game.
According to ESPN, Allen will play with Terrel Hunt, Charley Loeb and John Kinder to tray and replace the NFL-ready Nassib, who many scouts feel is the best quarterback in the draft. New coach Scott Shafer said that all the players have shown talent at the position and that Allen will have a chance
