Liverpool Transfer News: Alex Pearce Set for Free Transfer to Anfield? Kucka Flattered by Reds Interest

Liverpool are set to sign Reading defender Alex Pearce on a free transfer, while Genoa midfielder Juraj Kucka admitted to being flattered by links with a move to Anfield.

The Reds are in the market for at least one central defender following the retirement of Jamie Carragher.

With the futures of Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates also up in the air, manager Brendan Rodgers has been looking at bringing in cover in the center-back position.

Pearce is out of contract with Reading, who were relegated from the English Premier League this season, and the Reds were linked with a move for the 24-year-old last month, even if they immediately denied it.

However, according to reports, it now looks like Liverpool could indeed be set to sign the talented defender on a free transfer.

Reading had said of their desire to keep Pearce at the club as Nigel Adkins attempts to take Reading straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

"We have been speaking to him with regards to his contract throughout the season," director of football Nick Hammond said of Pearce last week. "Unfortunately, up until this point we have not managed to find a deal which is mutually acceptable to both parties.

"I am keen, however, now the season has finished, to have a further conversation with Alex and his representatives to understand his thoughts and give him the club's final position."

Meanwhile, Genoa's defensive midfielder Kucka revealed he was aware of interest from Liverpool, but also expressed his happiness at the Italian club, where he enjoyed a solid season.

"It's good news," the 26-year-old told Dennik Sport. "I have read it on the internet.

"I have not called my compatriot Martin Skrtel and have no plans to do so. I prefer to keep my feet on the ground.

"I am a Genoa player, so I have to think that I'll play in Genoa the next season.

"But I can imagine what it would mean to wear the Liverpool shirt."
