The Atlanta Falcons seem dead set on signing Richard Seymour, just not until Saturday. The team has been in the market for one more veteran defensive player to round out their roster and hopefully get them back into Super Bowl contention. After being just nine yards short of the Super Bowl last season, the Falcons made defense a priority to help the team next season. With that, Seymour could be the final puzzle piece needed.
The Falcons have been in contract with the veteran defensive lineman for a week now. They are ultimately just wanting for a few things to play out before putting the pen to paper. After June 1, the Falcons have a lot more cap space to work with and can sign Seymour to a more attractive deal. The team will free up more than $6 million once Tyson Clabo's contract comes off the books on that date. At this moment, they only have $2 million to work with and cannot afford to sign Seymour.
The seven-time Pro Bowler could be a huge signing for the Falcons. They are looking for someone they can play with Osi Umenyiora and add size up front. Seymour can do just that and be an effective pass rusher in the process. At 33, he is on the older side of defensive players, but he has proven to still be a productive player and would give the Falcons a strong defensive tandem.
Seymour went to five straight Pro Bowls during his time with the New England Patriots. He was traded to the Oakland Raiders in 2009 where he earned two more Pro Bowl trips. His 2012 was a down year as injuries hampered his production. He played just eight games, accumulating 15 tackles and three sacks. However, Seymour's career stats speak volumes for him. In 12 NFL seasons, he has 57.5 sacks.
The Falcons finished as the fifth-worst team in sacks in 2012. That is what led to the release of John Abraham in the first place. The team is hoping that Seymour can stay healthy and bounce back to his old self for 2013. As the team reports for OTAs, Seymour could join next week.
