Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Tony Romo Ready For Rookies In Camp After Missing OTA Workouts With Injury, Jerry Jones Wants QB To Be Like Peyton Manning

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo got a huge contract in the offseason and as head coach Jason Garrett gives him more responsibilities on offense, the star is hoping to get more time with the rookie players after he returns from an injury that will keep him out until minicamp in June.

According to Pro Football Talk, Romo will be spending more time with the rookies during the formal training camp after missing time during OTAs due to a cyst on his back. The team focused on offense in the draft and brought in center Travis Frederick, tight end Gavin Escobar and wide receiver Terrance Williams, all players that Romo will be working with closely during the season. Romo said that his time away from the team could affect his timing with the rookies and that he hopes that he can get some more time in with them as the offseason heads into the summer.

Jerry Jones gave Romo a big extension and he is hoping that he can have a Payton Manning-like effect on the offense going forward. Romo hopes to develop some chemistry with the players to add to an offense that already has DeMarco Murray as well as Dez Bryant, who had a huge season with the team last year. Romo put up some great numbers, but he has still yet to perform in the playoffs, which is one reason why many criticized his deal that he got with the team.

Romo is expected to be back after his surgery for the minicamp in June and although he will miss time with the rookies he is looking forward to getting them involved in the offense. Jones asked Romo to look at some of the rookies on film already, which would help give him a leg up once he returns. Last season the Cowboys were third in the league in passing yards per game, but their biggest issue was in the running game where they ranked 31ast after dealing with numbers injuries.

"I think sometimes timing," Romo said, via Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com. "But at the same time, I'm going to wear that out with them, too. I'm sure they'll want to get out of here a little bit in June and July but I'll probably force the hand a little bit to keep them around and it'll be a good thing for us. It'll be just a bonus time-wise."
