The frenzy around Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins is increasing by the minute. The coach was given permission to speak with other interested teams after discussions for a long-term contract failed. As teams line up to get the first interview with Hollins, he is not interested in going anywhere.
Hollins led the Grizzlies to their best season in franchise history. The team won 56 regular-season games and completed a trip to the Western Conference Finals before losing in a four-game series to the San Antonio Spurs. Despite the success, Hollins future was constantly in question due to his contract expiring at the end of June. The Grizzlies have expressed interest in retaining Hollins, but discussions for a new contract have not gone well.
Memphis gave Hollins full permission to speak to another team, but Hollins intends on staying put.
"I don't want to talk to any other teams. I want to be here...I told the media after our exit intereviews that if the team offered me a contract that I felt was fair, I'd sign to it the next day," Hollins told WHBQ in Memphis.
It was rumored that Hollins and the Memphis front office were at odds during the season. The head coach was upset after the team pulled off a trade sending Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors. It was reported the two sides did not see eye-to-eye on key philosophical areas. After Hollins was told to consider other options, Memphis was interested in hiring lead assistant Dave Joerger as his replacement, something Hollins laughs off.
If Hollins does decide to consider jumping ship, both the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers are prepared to make him a large contract offer. The Nets have had Hollins on their radar for a good portion of the season and are prepared to make him a very rich man. The Clippers are seeking someone that is proven in the league and will please Chris Paul. Hollins is on their short list of potential candidates should he make himself available.
Memphis could be in a tough spot. If they re-sign Hollins to a long-term deal, they risk losing Joerger. He has interviewed to be a head coach with multiple teams including Portland and Charlotte in the past. He currently runs the defense for the Grizzlies. Hollins simply said there is no reason to drop a proven coach for an 'upcoming superstar'.
