Los Angeles Lakers Rumors: Metta World Peace Not Returning? Agent to Negotiate Final Year of Contract as Dwight Howard to Dictate Future

The Los Angeles Lakers could be losing several key players before the 2013 season. As star Kobe Bryant works to come back from injury, both Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol are uncertain of a return. Steve Nash may or may not be finished and now, Metta World Peace could be headed out of Hollywood as well.

MWP currently is the only player on the Lakers that is truly in control of his future with the Lakers. He has a player option in his contract that would allow him to return for one more season. The final year of his current contract is worth $7.7 million. At this point in the Lakers' offseason, MWP is not prepared to make any rash decisions when it comes to his future and where he wants to go.

"I don't want to think off emotions. I hired my agent for a reason so I'll let him and the Lakers do their job to try to keep me a Laker for long term. Rather than stress myself out and worry about what's going on for the Lakers, I'll let them do their job. Then they can get back to me," MWP said on Tuesday.

MWP has until June 25 to make a decision about his future. He is seeking a new deal instead of playing out the final year of his contract and then entering free agency, but the Lakers also have several other players to worry about making things complicated.

"Whatever the Lakers and my agent feel best, that's what I'm going to do. It's not about me. I'm not making the decision based on me. I'll let the Lakers and my agent make the decision for me," MWP said.

Should MWP decide to opt out of his final year, the Lakers could use the amnesty provision under the new collective bargaining agreement. This move would save the team several million in luxury tax penalties. They would still be required to pay the year of salary. With the Lakers current situation, they may not be will to give MWP a long-term deal in the future. With several large salaries on the books, they are likely not going to give MWP a contract worth his market value. If a player like Howard comes back and the contract stays on the books, MWP might not have the option to stay on.

Sources close to MWP believe he will stay on for one more season and then worry about a long-term deal next year after the Lakers have dealt with both Howard and Gasol's futures. MWP is not concerned about things at this point. He had one of his best seasons with the Lakers, averaging 12.8 points on 40.5 percent shooting per game.
