The Detroit Tigers face the Tampa Bay Rays one last time in their three-game series. First pitch is a little after 1 p.m. ET. Watch online as MLB.TV brings you the Free Game of the Day. Let's look at the matchups.
On the mound for the home team, the Tigers will have the unstoppable Max Scherzer who has been lights out in 2013. Posting a 7-0 record, Scherzer has carried some of the load as Justin Verlander has struggled through the first two months of the season. His record is accompanied by a 3.42 ERA, 91 strikeouts and only 18 walks. Opponents are only hitting .187 against him and he's sporting a 0.89 WHIP.
On the opposing side, the Rays will have Roberto Hernandez on the hill and he has truly struggled through his first starts of the year. He is 3-5 with a 4.87 ERA in 10 starts this season. However, Hernandez put together a strong outing in his last start as he shut down the Miami Marlins through 8.2 scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, no walks and struck out five batters.
The Rays are trying to make a run in the A.L. East. The Boston Red Sox are dominating the division as the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are trailing. At 32-26, the Rays are just three games back from first place in the division and they are occupying fourth place. For the Tigers, they are trying to hold on to first place in the A.L. Central. At 31-26, the Tigers are just two games ahead the Cleveland Indians in the standings. Without a doubt, this is the Tigers division to lose.
