French Open Predictions: Serena Williams Over Maria Sharapova in Women's Singles

Women's Singles already has its two finalists after Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams advanced out of the semifinals Thursday afternoon. Who will win? Well, if history has taught us something it's the Williams owns Sharapova and unless she gets overly confident, Serena should be able to dominate in the 2013 French Open Finals.

When comparing both players' performances at Roland Garros, Willaims and Sharapova have cruised through the first couple of rounds. Sharapova and Williams went unchallenged until the quarterfinals. While Sharapova needed three sets to get by Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals, Williams only gave up one game in her entire match against Sara Errani.

Sharapova has had some trouble putting away weaker competition in the latter stages of the tournament. Williams came across a bit of a bump when facing Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals, but she quickly bounced back to erase any doubt that her game was slowing down. Meanwhile, Sharapova barely beat Azarenka in the third set 6-4.

When looking at both players head-to-head, Williams has the advantage going into the Finals. Williams and Sharapova have met three times already in 2013. Williams has won the last three matches, the last two were Finals in Miami and Madrid, the latter which was clay. In fact, Williams has dominated Sharapova since 2004 winning 12 straight matches holding a career record of 13-2.

If there is a mountain to climb, it's one Sharapova will have to conquer in the Finals as both players know Williams has the advantage and unless Serena suffers an injury during the match, she should be able to confidently win this match. Sharapova is the defending French Open champion, but Williams is making her first bid at the French Open title since winning it back in 2002.
