Max Scherzer is starting to join elite company as the Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher continues to put together an impressive season. He is unbeaten on the season going into the team's game against the Boston Red Sox. He is currently second in the American League in opponents' batting average (.189) and strikeouts (116). Scherzer is 10-0 on the season with a 3.08 ERA. In his last start, the right handers allowed just one run and struck out 10 in six innings in Baltimore.
Scherzer became the first pitcher to win his first 10 starts since Roger Clemens went 11-0 in 1997. He has also recorded at least six strikeouts in each of his first 14 starts. The last pitcher to do that was Pedro Martinez in 2011. He also became just the second Tigers pitcher to go 10-0.
Boston Red Sox intend on slowing the pitcher down. Scherzer has a 9.21 ERA in his career against Boston. The Red Sox are coming off a big day with the batt after the team put up 17 hits on Friday. Shane Victorino went 4 for 5. Miguel Cabrera went 4 for 4.
They will send Allen Webster to the mound who lost his first start and has a 11.74 ERA. He is being recalled from Triple-A. The right-hander gave up eight runs in his second big league start back in May against Minnesota, where the team lost 15-8. He is 4-1 with a 3.16 ERA in his last six starts down in Pawtucket. The Red Sox believe his command looks much better.
