The Dallas Mavericks have positioned themselves to be players in free agency this year and after making it clear that they want to try and woo Dwight Howard, the team has focused on other areas, reaching out to Jose Calderon and Mo Williams as free agents.
According to Pro Basketball Talk, the Mavs have looked into signing Jose Calderon and Mo Williams after letting Darren Collison go and the team also signed Israeli based Gal Mekel to a contract for support as well. The team is looking to sign Dwight Howard and they will have some competition for the other free agents, including from the Milwaukee Bucks, Pacers, Hawks and Grizzlies.
The Pistons have tried to work on adding players in free agency, including Josh Smith and the team also wants to bring back Calderon after getting him in the Rudy Gay trade last season. The Mavericks have cleared tons of cap space for the team to try and sign Howard and he has also taken meetings with the Rockets, Warriors and Heat. The Mavericks like what Calderon brings to the game, as well as Mekel, who has college experience and professional experience after winning MVP of the Israel Premier League while averaging 13.3 points and 5.4 assists.
Calderon has been looked at as a possible trade option for the Mavericks in the past and the team sees him as their starting point guard if they sign him. The Mavericks feel that they can give Howard the best chance to win and a favorable contract, while the Rockets have put all hands on deck for that as well. The Mavericks have had a hard time winning consistently since becoming NBA champions and an overhaul of the point guard position could be step one.
